I often buy thin-sliced boneless pork chops. The package used to have a sticker that said "Thin Sliced - Great For Scaloppini!"

Now it says: "Thin Sliced - Serves More People!"

It was three-quarters of a pound of meat, cut into six chops. Man, I'm just thinking about someone buying that package so that everyone gets a chop, and... yeah.

I'm not a huge meat eater - I've retrained myself to eat about the proper serving (3-4 oz) - but I'd really notice if I was served a 2 oz "chop".

It's way less noticible if you make a dish that has meat in it - like adding it to veggies, or in a cassarole, or what have you.

Yes, I'm mostly vegetarian right now, so 2 oz is a treat.

But bear in mind, that two oz includes inedible bone and fat, so you are probably at around half the reccommended 3 oz cooked weight edible meat.

On the other hand, that would give a renal patient another ounce of protein for the day. It's nice not to use it all up in one meal.

A serving is 3 ounces of *cooked* meat. 2 ounces of a raw medium-fat meat seems likely to cook down to a Euchre deck. I'm not going to press the ONOZ PROTEIN DEFICIENCY IN THE USA alarm, but I'm actually mildly surprised that a meat packer has the authority to change the number of people that can be served by a pound of pork chops.

I'd appreciate the product anyway, because I aim for five small meals instead of three larger ones, and I tend to put that much boneless chicken breast in the grill and toss it into a rice bowl with some broccoli or such.

There are definitely people who would argue that the problem with the American diet is that we don't think of one of those chops as an adequate amount of meat.

Mind you, I buy 2-3 pounds of bone-in pork chops for four people...

There do seem to be cultural differences here. With my background, 2oz of meat sounds about right.

Chops? This would include some bone, right? That would make it worse.

That sounds about right to me - layer of onions, meat interleaved with slices of apple, baked. But then, we stretch mince with lentils, tenderloin with couscous stuffing, etc.

If we ate meat less often, I'd probably want more of it per serving.
