Oh. Dear. She cut it.

...Unevenly, one presumes?

Yup, age-appropriate behavior. Hard on you, though.

I never understood why my mother was so cross with me until my own child did it.

It will grow back. Just keep telling yourself that.

It would probably be undiplomatic for me to burst out laughing and demand pictures, wouldn't it?

(I'm sorry. It was traumatic enough to me when Molly demanded a haircut and had it all cut off at a salon, when she was three. These days she has chronically messy waist-length hair and I think back nostalgically to how cute and easy her pixie cut was...)

I didn't laugh. I swear.

Oh, come on. How could you not laugh?

I understand... and I truly sympathize.

(And the only reason I find it even mildly humorous is that I'm not a parent....)

Oh no...

How bad is it? (I realize it's bad that she cut it at all.)

Age appropriate behaviour for the WIN!

(I realize that doesn't help, but just know that my neighbour's three year old has refused to wear pants for the last two months. Wearing soccer shorts with longjohns underneath... and mine covered himself with pink bingo dabber the other day - that stuff doesn't wash off.)

Both Ben and Lydia Jane cut their own hair at one point. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, I think both of them did it twice. Ben actually cut his hair *down to the scalp* in front. The only way to salvage his looks was to shave him bald (http://www.flickr.com/photos/juverna/462098097/) and let it grow back out, so that's what we did.

I think that Rachel skipped that phase, but I could just be misremembering. Anyway, pretty soon she'll be a willful opinionated teenager, and any illusion I had of control over her hair will be over.

A missed opportunity to draw hair on with yellow marker a la Calvin and Hobbes!

Oh, no! What a trying situation. Is Alex very gleeful? My sister Bethany was rather pleased with herself when she cut her own hair.

Oh boy.

My sister and I traded - we used vaseline to 'sculpt' then cut 'bangs'.

I don't know how we've both managed to reach 30 :-)

Be thankful it was the hair. According to my mother, at that age I once cut off one of my own eyebrows.

I shaved my eyebrows too, instead of hair cutting. I thought I was the only one!

Okay, I am laughing. It'll grow back. You probably don't have parents who think cutting female hair is an abomination, in the Satanic sense. My mother had to cut my hair into a pixie cut when we got transferred to Guam because I kept getting heat rash with my long hair -- couldn't even pile it up on my head. My grandparents refused to talk to Mother for a while. (These days, because of the prednisone & cytoxan, I have rather a messy thin pixie look.)

Um, wow. Is this a common belief? Which sects or cults hold it?

I understand there are some Mormon and Christian fundamentalist sects that still have the same kind of ideas. My grandparents were very thorough Christian fundamentalists. Some of their ideas extended to my parents -- like alcohol or any stimulants (even coffee) were sinful -- but they were not as bad as Mother's parents.

I had a woman proselytizer once scream at me, "HAIR LIKE THAT IS AN ABOMINATION IN THE EYES OF GOD!" in Times Square. I believe she was from the Tony Alamo ministries.

(My response was to stop, look at her, and burst out laughing.)

Megan and Mary cut *each other's* hair. Trust me when I tell you the results may have been worse than when Megan cut her own hair.

I can still see the state of Mary's bangs...

My aunt wouldn't let my cousins get their hair cut, so my youngest cousin locked herself in the car with scissors and cut it herself. She actually did a really good job, and didn't cut all of the back because she couldn't see it, so it was pretty easy to tidy up. Which was better than I did. I somehow managed to get a huge piece of bubblegum stuck in my hair on the back of my head, so I cut out a huge chunk from my long hair.
