The picture I took of the antechamber/courtyard didn't turn out as well. This is a hollowed-out but roofless section of snowdrift. Alex is reclining on a little snow bench.



She has taken to shouting out from time to time, "It's the SNOWPOCALYPSE!" I'm glad we've raised her well.

If your drifts get big enough, you could show Alex how to make snow caves. Many years ago I remember digging them and then camping in them :)

These pictures remind me of the snow fort we (me and my friends down the block) built after the great Chicago blizzard of (IIRC) 1965, when we got 23 inches of "partly cloudy" just to start with, and were out of school for a week. It was one of the high points of my youth. My mother's, not so much, I suspect.

If you have one of those patio fire saucer things (there's a technical term for those, I just know it) you could put it in the snow fort, build a fire, and roast marshmallows!

(We did this one year -- actually, two years -- using our chiminea. Roasting marshmallows in the snow is actually a pain in the butt, because your hands get cold without mittens, but you can't really handle marshmallows with mittens on, but the kids thought it was the COOLEST THING EVER. Which is why we wound up doing it twice.)

I should clarify that I mean the snow fort without the roof.

I would hesitate to build a chimney lest I bring down the roof; I would definitely not want to build a fire inside a chimney-less snow shelter.

Um. You're suppose to roast the marshmallows in the *fire*... not the snow. That's probably why your hands get cold.

As for handling marshmallows with mittens on, for goodness sake, you're already going to be putting them over a hot fire and then *eating* them. Take the mittens off of the marshmallows *first*. Besides, what if the marshmallows were wearing mittens made from synthetics? You wouldn't want to eat *that!*
