When I was in elementary school, they still hauled out the really dangerous stuff. (Potassium permanganate and a manganese ribbon???? Maybe???? Anyway, not a smoke hood in sight.)
So that whole European airspace mess could have been avoided if they'd just had a green food coloring injection system in place on Eyjafjallajökull (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyjafjallaj%C3%B6kull)? Dang.
You know, I've always wanted to do a live thermite reaction as a volcano demo for a school group sometime. Unfortunately, I think insurance would have a heart attack :)
