Scene: Colin's bedroom at bedtime. Soft lullabies are on the CD player. The room is dark. We are rocking in the rocking chair, nursing. Colin appears to be almost asleep. Suddenly he pulls away and points off in the distance.

Colin:
AIRPLANE!!
Me: That's right, Colin rode on an airplane.
Colin: Yes!
Colin: nurses some more.
Colin: pulls off again. Bus! A bus!
Me: Yes, you also rode on a bus.
Colin: Airplane!
Me: That was really exciting.
Colin: Yes!

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

We've been home from our trip for more than three days and he still can't stop talking about it - to the extent that his limited vocabulary allows. Because THERE WERE AIRPLANES.

Edited to add: Just had another conversation with my son.

Colin: See-see! See-see! (this is his word for nursing)
Me: You want see-sees?
Colin: bends down and picks up a marker. Marker!
Me: You want a marker while you nurse?!
Colin: Please.

Congratulations seem in order. It must feel incredable to be able to converse for the first time with Colin.

I still marvel at my oldest nephew's first conversation with me. He said, "Unca Dabid, I got a BOOK!", and I thought, "Wow! Verbs, nouns and everything!"

We are working on communication with the babian life form here, too.

Her current thing is signing "more" whenever she wants, well, anything. Usually to nurse, like so:

*crawl crawl*
*pull up against couch*
*pat pat pat*

"Yes, sweetie?"

Yeah, babies get a lot of mileage out of that one. There was a long time in which the bulk of Colin's communicative vocabulary consisted of the signs for "more" and "all done." I guess there isn't much else they need to say. (At that time he communicated the desire to nurse less elegantly than KJ - a strong tug at the hem of my shirt pretty much got his point across.)

I am attempting to encourage her to use her "more" more, as our recent trip to Portland had a lot of her attempting to pull my bra off in random public locations ....

Awwwww!

So interesting to see things coming together too, remembering things, and remembering how they pleased him and wanting to talk about that.

Yes, it always seems very significant to me when babies progress beyond naming what they see to being able to talk about something that happened in the past. That's a big cognitive leap, all wrapped up there in the single word "AIRPLANE!!"
