Four habits of insanely cute toddlers.

1. Colin puts Alex's ponytail holders on his wrists or, sometimes, his ankles. Then he walks around displaying them to people and saying, "Pretty! Pretty!" If you tell him that yes, he is pretty, he will beam like it's his birthday.

2. He tucks humanoid toys under his chin and says "Awwwww..." in a baby-cuddling voice. The tinier and more incongruous the toy, the more adorable this is; it is pretty cute when he does it with his baby doll, and damn near fatal when it is a three-inch firefighter in full regalia.

3. He stands up on a chair, makes eye contact with the closest adult, shakes his hand in an admonitory fashion, and says sternly, "Get! Down!" Then, softly and sweetly: "Tank oo!" No actual sitting-down occurs in the course of this ritual, but he always thanks himself anyway.

4. He opens up one of the kitchen cabinets and removes its contents of paper towels. Then he uses the cabinet as a seat. It is exactly the right size.

You do have cute kids.

If you don't mind my asking, would you be open to speculating *why* Colin thanks himself after the instruction to sit down?

I'm pretty sure it's because when I say "Get down!" to him, and then he does sit down, I thank him. He seems to have absorbed the fact that "Get down! Thank you." is what you say in this type of situation, but not the fact that I am actually thanking him for complying.

Ah! That makes perfect sense, from the point of view of a toddler (based on what you've previously said about toddler development).

Jeromy gives Freckles bonks and kisses. Then shakes his finger at him and shouts, "Back! Back!"

He also looks for anything he's not supposed to pick up, picks it up, hands it to the nearest adult, and exclaims, "Tank Ooooo!"

SERIOUSLY cute! How's the interaction between the two of them? I love hearing about him!

I would say that the interaction between them is... typical. Sometimes they have a lot of fun playing together - running around, climbing on each other, etc. Sometimes Alex seeks Colin out and wants to do things with him.

Much of the time he irritates the crap out of her because he wants whatever she's playing with - or sometimes just because he exists on the planet.

He worships and adores her.

My sister and I became friends in our mid-teens, with almost the same age separation, but my mom didn't handle it as well. I was my sister's keeper from about age 7 on.
