Colin came running into the kitchen, drawn by the scent of frying pork chops.

"Meat! Meat!" he said, pointing up at the pan.

"Yes, I'm cooking meat."

He circled his hand on his chest and reinforced the ASL sign with the same word in English. "Please?"

He was crushed when I failed to reach right into the sizzling fat to pull one out for him.

With food, that was the literal truth for me: I was an adult before I really had good appetite/hunger management strategies. (I don't mean dieting, I mean things like anticipating that if I didn't eat at time X I'd probably be hungry at time Y and should have some food on standby, etc.)
