I'm visiting my folks this weekend. [livejournal.com profile] curiousangel stayed home, partly because he has a cold and partly because he has other things to do. It's a little lonely without him at night, but I'm enjoying having this time with my family outside the craziness of major holidays. My sister Debbie has come down from Boston, and my sisters Judy and Juanita already live in the same town as my parents - so it's a nice little mini-reunion, everyone but my brother, and complete with a pack of red-headed nieces and nephews underfoot.

My parents have gotten a new dog, after swearing that they wouldn't. Their last dogs were Norfolk Terriers and just weren't very personable - they didn't seek out much interaction with the family, and were prone to ripping things to shreds. This dog they got as an adult, from the pound. She's an impossibly sweet Labrador mix, very friendly and well-behaved. She and my dad go on hours-long rambles through the woods together - I've never seen him feel this way about a dog before. And she carries a stuffed animal around in her mouth. So cute.

Since the last time I visited, my dad's vision has gotten worse - or maybe it's just that he's more honest about the problems he's having. He now finds reading fatiguing, and has started getting books on tape from the library. Going online is hard for him because he keeps losing the pointer. I made it bigger for him, which hopefully will help for a while, but he's obviously going to have more and more trouble as time goes by.

There's still no treatment for age-related macular degeneration. I hope they come up with something soon, before he loses much more. He loves the scrapbooks he's made, thousands and thousands of pictures from his travels and his hiking trips. I can't imagine what it will be like for him when he can no longer see them.

I'm really glad your dad has the dog. I've got a soft spot for lab mixes. :)

There's one curled asleep on my laundry pile now.

Hey love. Good to see the visit is going well. Sorry about your father's vision. I gather he's adapting as best he can, but still. The dog sounds very personable.

Going online is hard for him

Has he tried searching for audio web-browsing software? I've never actually used any myself, but I understand that there are good packages about designed for blind web-surfers?

Heh. First he'd have to admit that he really is going blind.

Yes, I know there are resources out there - one of my old boyfriends works in computer accessibility for the blind, as a matter of fact. My dad probably isn't quite there yet - he can still read text and see pictures, he just tends to lose the mouse pointer against a busy background. But we are going to need to research this stuff for when his vision gets still worse.
