It's well worth clicking through to read the article even if, upon reading my intro, your brain immediately went "Oh yeah - abuse, incest, parental notification laws are a terrible idea." It's much more complex than that.

I had NO idea how complex it was (obviously was against parental notification laws anyway, for privacy issues, but am even more so now). Thanks for sharing - I definitely learned something!

Good grief, yes, the situation is much worse than I had imagined. The UK doesn't have parental notification law, and Ireland doesn't have legal abortion (except for a very few theoretical cases which as far as I'm aware have never been real), so it's not something I knew much about.

Ooof, that Unfogged thread is a bit eepy to me. "Parental notification is cool, we just need to fix it!" is the general vibe. (I live in a country where minors are by default presumed competent to make medical decisions for themselves from about age 14, although I'm not sure how that plays out for major surgery... not that surgical abortion is major surgery.)
