What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?

My mother's father's family were coal miners in Wales. My mother's mother's family were Nisbetts, a very minor branch of Scots aristocracy in the Border region - which apparently means that they were most likely a bunch of theiving, raiding, warring scoundrels. My father's family mostly comes from the part of middle Europe that is currently Austria.

Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?

I've already been to Wales and Scotland, and enjoyed them both immensely. But I've never really had much interest in what you might call ancestral touring. I didn't want to go to Wales and Scotland because I thought I had "roots" there, or would learn more about myself, or anything like that. I just thought they'd be interesting places to visit in their own right.

Which would you least like to visit? Why?

I haven't had much interest in visiting Austria. Again, I don't want to travel to places simply because my ancestors came from there - and by any other metric, there are lots of places that would be higher up on my travel list than Austria: Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Germany, back to Wales, Scotland, and England, Egypt, Kenya...

Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?

Only in the sense that my observance of holidays is generally in accordance with Northern European traditions.

Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc.)?

My great-grandparents on my mother's side, and on my father's father's side. Reportedly, my father's mother could trace at least one ancestor back to the Mayflower, but I don't know much about that.
