rivka: (her majesty)

Wednesday night I came home from the gym, had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] curiousangel, curled up to watch a baseball game with him, and promptly fell asleep on the couch for a couple of hours. Hard asleep.

Thursday morning I woke up exhausted. I came home from work and fell asleep on the couch. I couldn't really rouse myself when he came home, although I did get up eventually.

Woke up exhausted again today. I'm also having stomach cramps and mild, ah, intestinal distress. I managed some tea and a bagel with margarine for breakfast, but I couldn't really bring myself to contemplate lunch. Now I'm tired and hungry, but still finding food unappetizing. Bleah.

I've been on antibiotics (Keflex) since Sunday in an attempt to clear up a cyst on my breast. (It shows no sign of disappearing, damn it.) I hope this is just the antibiotics knocking me out, and not an actual illness. I also hope it goes away soon. I've been eating plain active-culture yogurt to try to keep my flora balanced, but I don't think my stomach could handle any today.

At least I'm having a good, quiet day at work. I even got to wear comfy clothes: jeans, sneakers, and my FUSE polo shirt. That's surprisingly comforting. I just wish it were warmer in my office, because I'm starting to shiver.

Keflex acts like Drano on my gut. You're quite likely reacting to it. Pepto-bismol helped deal with it to some degree, but I'll look at Keflex with dread from now on.

This is what my doctor gave me when I refused to take Amoxicillin, which gives me the yeast infection from hell every time I take it. I asked for penicillin, and she said "how about Keflex?" I should've asked why I couldn't have penicillin, damn it.

But Keflex is also the right drug for different infections. It's the antibiotic of choice for deep infected cysts or abscesses, according to my gynecologist, who prescribed it for an infected gland deep in my pubic mound.

Well, damn. Poor l'il me. I'll just hope that my side effects level off here. I can take this until Tuesday.

Do ask.

My guess would be that she was trying to get out of the 'cillan family if it bothers you. Also, different types of antibiotics address different issues. F'rinstance, Macrobid has a high urinary concentration, which makes it good for UTIs. Amox is very wide-spectrum, but breaks down quickly. Silmarian is allergic to cillans and sensitive to some that have cillan-like constructions, so the Zithromax is iffy.

My solution was usually to force them to do a sensitivity culture to get the lowest possible time on the drug, and then extract two Diflucan pills from them, one for the start of symptoms and one for the end of the course.

Which is a reasonable guess. Except that my handy home medical reference (in the form of my older sister the primary care doc) tells me that the reason Amoxicillin causes yeast infections is that it kills off gram-negative bacteria as well as gram-positive bacteria. Penicillin just kills gram-positive bacteria - she's the one who suggested that I ask for it the next time I have strep.

Also, different types of antibiotics address different issues.

This is true. And apparently [livejournal.com profile] mactavish's doctor would recommend Keflex for a cyst also. Oh well. I can take this.

If you can't stomach yogurt, you can get lacto-baccillus capsules in the crunchy-granola supplement section.

Call your doctor and whine. There is every chance that you can take a different antibiotic.

Closed early for the holiday weekend. I'd have to get a lot worse than "tired and uncomfortable" before I'd feel okay about bothering the on-call doc.

Poor lil Rivka! *pat pat*

I went to a doctor feeling utterly miserable a couple of years ago. *cough*wheeze*gack*. He informed me it was going around and probably viral so he would prefer not to give me a scrip for anti-biotics.

I said, "Thank the gawds. I *hate* taking them , they make me feel like hammered drek."

He looked a little startled and we had a nice talk about people who don't feel like a doctor is doing something for them without a scrip for antibiotics.

But they really DO make me feel like hammered drek and I send you many pats and soothing noises.

*HUG*
