Another strange question from the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

I didn't make this questionnaire up. I'm not the one who chose it for our research. And this kind of question demonstrates why I didn't.

Obviously there's something seriously wrong with the available choices here. This item begs for deconstruction. Or maybe elaboration. Doesn't it?

Ok, it makes *slightly* more sense to me than "Do you like tall women" (That being off the Minnesota Multi-Phasic Inventory (MMPI, anyway) I had to take as part of the interview process for my former job (working for a human resources consulting firm. Doing tech support, but...)

That one, which was true/false, I just stared at for about ten minutes, going "How do I answer this? I'm not *attracted* to tall women, because I'm not attracted to other women sexually, but I don't *dislike* tall women, at least not because they're tall."

Le sigh.

Thsi one, I can at least see why they'd ask, since I know one of the signs of depression is giving up on outward appearance stuff.

(I'd be the one voting for "As much care as I've ever taken" with the note that I've only ever made it to tidy and clean, and rarely get beyond that on the scale of tending to one's appearance. (I don't wear makeup, do anything that takes more than a minute to do to my hair, or do anything to my nails or anything like that.)

I wasn't satisfied with the original formatting of the poll, so I changed it. But they don't let you just go in and change a poll - I had to create a new one. bunyip seems to have gone ahead and blithely re-answered the new one, but Mary (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mactavish)'s response was lost. Sorry, Mary... I didn't realize anyone had already answered when I deleted it. Would you rather re-enter an answer, or just give up on me as a hopeless case?

That's insane. Do you get to skip questions? Do they have a classification for people who consistently write in smartass answers?

You don't get to skip questions, if I remember correctly, but since I took it, most places have phased it out. (It's also strongly culturally biased - another question was "I like the book "Alice in Wonderland" with again, true/false options. (What that means if you've never read it, I don't know...)

The weird questions made a lot more sense once I did a bit more research. The MMPI is gathered from questions used to measure various psychological disorders and such among limited populations (prison and some other things of the kind looking for things like depression and schizophrenia and such) and the results then examined, and it was discovered they applied more generally to the population as well.

Other tests have since been designed, and they're a lot less bizarre, as I understand it.
