Cross Stitch Collectibles has finally made a pattern for my favorite M.C. Escher picture.

wow. the world of needlecrafts sure has changed since they taught me in school -- i hated it then, mostly because i hated the grandmotherly (for my own value of grandmother) patterns. though it might have also been way too fiddly for me at the time. but man, those are gorgeous. not that i could see myself do the klimt, mind. have you ever actually done anything like this? it's probably still way too fiddly for me, and my eyes would not cooperate. but wow. awesome.

of course now i am thinking that creating the patterns itself by software wouldn't be hard to do at all, though matching existing thread colours from various manufacturers would be a bit extra work for creating lookup tables. these patterns, do they do that for you? (yes, i am a geek, why do you ask?) it would be real cool to be able to make one's own so one can pick whatever one likes instead of waiting for somebody else to create it.

There's software you can buy that turns any picture into a cross stitch pattern, coded by color numbers for whichever of the main thread manufacturers you choose.

My understanding is, though, that a purely mechanical conversion doesn't produce the best results - there's a process of cleanup and simplification that's best done by a person who adapts the computer-generated pattern for actual stitching.
