The nice young woman at For Eyes found an earpiece that fits, but does not match, my glasses frame, and fastened it on for me. Total elapsed time: less than ten minutes.

"Thank you, that's wonderful," I said. "How much?"

She looked surprised. "Oh, it's no charge."

And this was after I told her I'd bought the glasses somewhere else. My next pair is definitely coming from her.

Leaving the glasses shop, I discovered that two new restaurants have opened up within two blocks of the alt.polycon 12 hotel. One is a small cafe and antiquarian bookstore, serving inexpensive sandwiches, coffee drinks, and desserts. The other seems to serve upscale American food with an accent on regional Southern flavors. Mmmm. Let's hope they both survive until January.

Oh, brava! (And that is *exactly* why she did it for you, but brava to her, nonetheless.)

Opticians are cool - this happened to me when my own glasses deconstructed suddenly on a day when there was no possibility of getting to the place that had actually supplied them. The opticians I dropped into did a splendid job and charged nothing. This doesn't always pertain - I have occasionally been charged for minor repairs - but I recall also the very helpful and non-charging place in Amsterdam on Rokin.
