Milestones you don't know to watch for.

Looking through a photo album, we came across this picture of Alex sitting on her Gran's shoulder.

Alex studied it. "What's she singing?" she asked.

"Singing? I don't know. What do you think she was singing?"

And Alex sang, to the approximate tune of Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah: "Mister Alex on my shoulder..."

She told a joke. With a set-up. She's said funny things on purpose before, but this is the first time I've ever heard her actually set up a punchline. And it was funny.

(Okay, she's not going to be invited to perform in a comedy club anytime soon, but it wasn't just a weird piece of surrealism like most preschooler jokes. You know?)

Liam was pre-verbal when he told his first joke. He'd lost his fork, and we asked him where it went. He opened his mouth and pointed down his throat, as if to say "I ate it!" (It was actually beside him on the seat or something.)
