Milestones you don't know to watch for.

Alex studied it. "What's she singing?" she asked.
"Singing? I don't know. What do you think she was singing?"
And Alex sang, to the approximate tune of Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah: "Mister Alex on my shoulder..."
She told a joke. With a set-up. She's said funny things on purpose before, but this is the first time I've ever heard her actually set up a punchline. And it was funny.
(Okay, she's not going to be invited to perform in a comedy club anytime soon, but it wasn't just a weird piece of surrealism like most preschooler jokes. You know?)
