I swear that soon I will post something more substantive than "conversations with my daughter." But I couldn't pass this one up.

Alex: Can I do this?
Me: I'm going to say... no.
Alex: I think I can do it. (pause...) Mr. Obama says, "yes we can."

*giggles madly*

Does this lead to many future repetitions of "Mr. Obama is not your mother, I am," among mothers of this generation?

Kinda hard to refute that chain of logic.

Mr Obama is not here to clean up after you, is he?

In the children's section at our library, they have a biography of Obama displayed on an end shelf, with a nice cover photo of him - and Elena will go right up to it and say "That's Barack Obama!" It totally cracks up the children's librarian when she does this. (Then Elena starts muttering about Hillary Clinton and John McCain - she just knows all those names are somehow associated. It's a riot.)

I was explaining to Alex that it was time to choose a new president, and people were going to pick between Barack Obama and John McCain. I told her that Papa and I don't like John McCain because he's too much like President Bush.

"Oh," she said sympathetically. "He doesn't do too well?"

I thought that summed it up succinctly, but compassionately.

Alex supported Clinton in the primaries, but she's been accepting about switching allegiances for the general election.

Yeah. We're a little slow on the whole "teaching compassion about W." Pretty big about it with people in real life, pretty big about being compassionate with people who are affected by tragedies.

Bush? McCain? the whole lot of 'em? Nah. "They make war, and they're not fair."

I don't want to be around if she ever runs into our County Executive. She'll go off on him.

When he was first elected, I was teaching four year olds, and one came in talking about how Bush was basically a big ol' meanie. This was in Berkeley, mind you. I said, "His mother loves him, though. He might have some nice things about him." And we tried to come up with things. The kids did come up with some, including that he might love his mom, too.

OK, the original post was funny enough, but that comment just about caused a spit-take!

It may be time for a lesson about the difference between "Can I?" and "May I?"

If you don't say yes to everything your daughter asks, then you are objectively pro-McCain.
