I swear that soon I will post something more substantive than "conversations with my daughter." But I couldn't pass this one up.

Alex: Can I do this?
Me: I'm going to say... no.
Alex: I think I can do it. (pause...) Mr. Obama says, "yes we can."

I thought that summed it up succinctly, but compassionately.

Yeah. We're a little slow on the whole "teaching compassion about W." Pretty big about it with people in real life, pretty big about being compassionate with people who are affected by tragedies.

Bush? McCain? the whole lot of 'em? Nah. "They make war, and they're not fair."

I don't want to be around if she ever runs into our County Executive. She'll go off on him.

When he was first elected, I was teaching four year olds, and one came in talking about how Bush was basically a big ol' meanie. This was in Berkeley, mind you. I said, "His mother loves him, though. He might have some nice things about him." And we tried to come up with things. The kids did come up with some, including that he might love his mom, too.
