I never received the Melissa virus. I never received the I Love You virus. I've never been forwarded a copy of the Nieman Marcus cookie recipe by a friend who thought it was for real.

But by golly, today I've joined the Internet Community in full. I got a Nigerian scam solicitation in my inbox. I feel so much more a part of things now.

As 98 said to me when I got my first Nigerian Scam...Congratulations!

A flood starts with a single drop. Just wait.

This morning I got four copies of a spam through four different addresses. Sometimes having forwarding enabled from past jobs isn't as good an idea as one might think.

Oh, I get plenty of Spam. I just never got a famous fraud before.

Off to do my twelve minutes of walking...

I usually scan them before deleting - some of them are quite amusing in their descriptions of who they are and where the money came from.

Here's a link to a fun Salon article about them.

You did forward it to "the authorities" who like to track such things, yes?

And...careful what you wish for. I'm sorely tempted to fulfill that empty spot in your netizenship and send you samples of all those. Well, not the cookie recipe, because I've known it's not real for a long, long time. (I don't think I ever thought it was real...)

I did, with the entire message path.

...but I hear that they're good.

You wouldn't send me viruses. I would give you my killer mournful look, and you'd be slain with guilt.

The Nigerian Oil Scam has a very long and exciting past that goes back before the days of the public internet, and the days before personal computers. This thing goes back to the days when folks would stuff envelopes ( "make thousands of dollars a week stuffing envelopes in the privacy of your own hovel" ) I get several of these per quarter and have for several years now.
Just for funsies go to that Salon link, or simply go to this handy pre-formatted google search --- http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&querytime=g&q=nigerian+oil+scam

And by the way, last year the TBI and FBI found a storefront operation set up to hide the operations of a mass mailing/emailing operation right here in the Nashville area. The office was set up JUST for that purpose. Apparently there are enough folks that actually fall for the
scam. It takes all kinds, ya know....

Congrats!!! ( extends secret handshake )

And that's what annoys me so much. Telemarketers - universally despised. But they're still calling, which must mean that the companies find it a profitable form of marketing. Who's buying? And would they please stop!!!
