I yawned hard on the way home from the theater tonight, and there was a sudden snap. It felt to me like my jaw had dislocated briefly and then re-located. And now it aches. Scary. I hope this is just a freak occurrence, and not something I'm going to need to watch out for from now on.

is a side effect of TMJ. If you've ever had it (and I'm guessing you have had, somewhere along the line), this kind of popping will happen to you occasionally as a mandibular joint snaps back into the place it should have been all along. As long as it's an infrequent occurrence, you needn't begin to freak out about it, but if it does become regular, asking your dentist about it will be in order.

I was about to say, when that happened to me, I then had about a week of OW if I chewed on that side, but it went away. However, I now have a poppy jaw - when I chew incautiously, it makes incredibly gross Foley-artist-for-a-Bruckheimer-film noises. :-/
