I yawned hard on the way home from the theater tonight, and there was a sudden snap. It felt to me like my jaw had dislocated briefly and then re-located. And now it aches. Scary. I hope this is just a freak occurrence, and not something I'm going to need to watch out for from now on.

Ouch. I've occasionally had something like that happen, with a "pop" rather than a "snap", but with the achiness afterwards. So far, it has not caused me any real trouble.

For the record, I did dislocate my jaw once and it hurt MUCH worse than these occurrences (which is not to say anything about yours, in that I don't share your nervous system).

Unless you've actually had a dislocation before, this almost certainly represents a strain/sprain, as you stretched the jaw, and no worse than that.... chalk it up to "freak", I think.

Ouch. Hopefully, it will be less sore in the morning.

Did you do anything recently that might've put added stress on your jaw?t

I often experience something like what you describe when I yawn if I'm very tired. It has never had any long-lasting effect on me. Hope you're feeling better by the time you read this. (Love you.)

is a side effect of TMJ. If you've ever had it (and I'm guessing you have had, somewhere along the line), this kind of popping will happen to you occasionally as a mandibular joint snaps back into the place it should have been all along. As long as it's an infrequent occurrence, you needn't begin to freak out about it, but if it does become regular, asking your dentist about it will be in order.

I was about to say, when that happened to me, I then had about a week of OW if I chewed on that side, but it went away. However, I now have a poppy jaw - when I chew incautiously, it makes incredibly gross Foley-artist-for-a-Bruckheimer-film noises. :-/

I also had something like this happen once, except in my case it sounded like the bone was cracking. (BTW, I have rather sever TMJ problems, which I assume are related). It was sore for a couple of days, but then went back to normal.

Go figure.

:-)
