Where would you shop, online or (in the MD/DC area) in real life, for fancy jams or jellies?

[identity profile] takumashii.livejournal.com 2006-12-15 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sarabeth's (http://www.mailordercentral.com/sarabethskitchen/products.asp?dept=2). They were on Oprah, if you put any stock in such things.

(Belatedly...) Thanks for the recommendation! We went with Sarabeth's, and if the jar that was opened while we were there is any indication, ohmygod that stuff is good.

Have you ever seen 6 Degrees of Seperation by John Guare?

"You know what Rich People really like? Jam!"

"Really?"

"Really! If you want to say thank you to a Rich Person, send them a pot of jam! Raspberry... or.. strawberry. With a little red checked cloth on top of it. They love that."

Sadly, I don't know where to get jam online. I tend to either make it, or trade for it. In NYC I have a favorite jam, but I can't remember it's exact name except that I know it when I see it, and it comes in a mason jar.

Wow. THat was useless, but possibly entertaining at least...

*snort*

In fact, this is for a Christmas present for rich people. Rich people we share very few interests with. But they like jam!

Harry and Davids? Not fancy enough?

My suggestion too. Their J&P selection is much better than old hickory or swiss colony.

Wegmans, but I go to Wegmans for damn near anything related to food. Williams-Sonoma has a nice fancy spreads selection, as does Sur La Table (if there's one in your area).

[identity profile] selki.livejournal.com 2006-12-15 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sur La Table isn't that close, but I do like the one in Tyson's Galleria: http://www.surlatable.com/stores/index.cfm

Beth's Farm Kitchen (http://www.bethsfarmkitchen.com/categories.asp). Beth is a friend of my husband's family, so we've gotten a bunch of things from them. Very tasty, especially the chutneys, and she hires a lot of poor NYC kids to run the stands at the farmer's market and help with production.

I haven't used the site before; it looks a little rough. But the product is great.

Totally unrelated:

PENGUINS!

[identity profile] rivka.livejournal.com 2006-12-17 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
It took a long time for me to figure out what this response was related to. "I didn't use my penguin userpic on this post! What...?" Finally the penguin dropped: new journal style! Indeed. I love the chubby little penguins.

I'd give a call to Ma Petite Shoe in Hampden, I thought I remember seeing jam there (heck, if all else fails, buy them some Vosges chocolates!). I'm not sure what's being offered at the Waverly or downtown markets. Maybe check out Belvedere Square and see what everyone's offering? Especially Neopol or Atwater's.

Online, maybe:

(some friends got their cheese of the month and said it's awesome)

The Kukui jams are delicious and made with sugar, not corn syrup.

Click on Products and then Jams and Jellies. The Estate Select Naturals are impressive.

My own favorite is [are?] the Pineapple Preserves.

You just pay shipping from Chicago.

http://stonewallkitchen.com is popular among the Food & Wine crowd. Can't personally vouch for them, though, as all I've had is their organic yogurt.

I love the stuff from Beth's Farm Kitchen. Be sure to buy yourself some Dilly Beans and some Blazing Tomato Chutney.

And someone above even likes it.

Oh boy, do I ever want some of their cranberry-horseradish chutney.

[identity profile] minnehaha.livejournal.com 2006-12-16 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't had that. Sounds delicious.

Then Bellow Yellow Chutney is also good.

Maybe I'll place an order. I'm down to my last jar of Blazing Tomato Chutney: the best thing in the world to put on meatloaf.

I could be talked into making meatloaf.

I would love a good meatloat right about now. With pork and lamb mixed in with the beef.

I sense a theme in your comments here

[identity profile] selki.livejournal.com 2006-12-16 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, please, [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha, make your meatloaf and revel in it!

Maybe I'll pick up some ground beef and stuff and make one myself; don't think I've had any since October.

[identity profile] selki.livejournal.com 2006-12-16 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hadn't noticed the K. and B signoffs. Thought you were just talking to yourself (one person) waiting for external meatloaf validation or something. :-)

[identity profile] minnehaha.livejournal.com 2006-12-16 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we know it's confusing for people who don't know us.

When we first created our LJ, we didn't always sign our posts, which was confusing for a number of people. Even more interesting, our Friends say they can't always tell who wrote what.

Beth's is excellent but so is the thimbleberry jam from the Society of St. John's monks in Eagle River, MI. They have a web site.

I'll heartedly second thimbleberry jam.

The Safeway out here in Pasadena has a very nice selection. I'd imagine the one in Canton would too.

No real web presence, but they send all sorts of exotic stuff out by mail, and would probably be happy to help you over the phone. And there's got to be some sort of cachet to an international delivery.

A visit to their store is not to be missed if you're in the neighbourhood.
