Breaking news from the McCain campaign: God is a petty, puffed-up, status-crazy adolescent.

It really makes you wonder: if they really believe that God is this way, why would they worship him?

I wonder if this "prayer" crosses legal lines. the IRS looks pretty askance at pastors who preach political messages from the pulpit and start looking at whether they deserve their tax exempt status to be removed...

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=161131,00.html

and

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2006/04/29/irs_scrutinizing_charities_political_work/

The relevant line from the IRS site is Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one "which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office."

Because if their god is just like them, they get to feel better about themselves and can be sure that they are right.

I'm not a believer, but I still find plenty in the New Testament to calibrate my moral compass. Would that these people did some thoughtful reading of their holy book.

There's plenty, though, in the New Testament, that is downright reprehensible, and I don't think it's the best idea to recommend reading the book and counting on them to pick the morally acceptable parts.

The sad thing is that they think that makes their God look good.

WTF was with all the talk about God's reputation being on the line? Is he personally in charge of the get out the vote drive, and if he doesn't come through, no future candidate will ever hire him again?

Besides, I thought Christians were supposed to be monotheists. They shouldn't even be acknowledging that there are any alternatives.

I am unclear on the link between God and McCain. Did God issue an endorsement that I missed? Michael, who has a stronger stomach than I do, listens to a fair amount of conservative talk radio. He says that there has been a lot of pronouncements recently that if you're a Christian, the only person you can vote for is McCain. I'm not sure what their rationale is for that.

Silly Unitarian. Because He's BIG. And TOUGH. And if you don't worship Him, He'll kick your ass.

What other reason for worshipping a particular god COULD there be? That's why it's IMPORTANT that He kicks those other gods' asses. If He DOESN'T kick those other gods' asses, then He's NOT the biggest and the toughest, and that pastor is going to have to go worship whatever god DOES win.

And that pastor isn't going to like it, because he totally loses all his seniority and banked vacation days when he changes gods. So his god had BETTER win.

I'm not sure how this god face-off (god-off?) fits into the idea that I personally know of some devout Christians who are Obama supporters.

And what about those of us who pray to a goddess? If his god beats up on my goddess, is that divine domestic violence? Or is that only if they are in a relationship first? (Inquiring minds want to know!)

Because my brain went there ...

I'd go for assault, personally.

On another note, I'm not sure I want to think too hard about what a justice system would look like if it allowed a deity to be arrested for crimes against a mortal. How many counts of rape would Zeus be up for? Can you imagine the child support?

It's because they want people to believe that only non-Christians support Obama, especially to perpetuate the ridiculous myth that a lot of middle Americans still believe, that he is Muslim and/or that terrorists back him. Perhaps even that he is a terrorist.

When the reality is that Obama is far more Christian than McCain.

between this and the last post, I am very very scared now. I had a sinking feeling myself - especially here in California because there is a very awful campaign about border control, basically. Talking about how our influx of immigrants is to blame for basically everything.

capsweb.org is the website they advertise on tv and the radio. to me? it's racist and only dimly veiled behind a guise of "concerned citizen."

This ad campaign and the apparent direction of the McCain campaign are both scary.

I'm a Christian. If Obama doesn't win, I'm going to scream and bang my head repeatedly against the nearest wall in despair. MY God is sorely grieved and angry that there are many woefully misinformed bigots speaking in Her name. Unfortunately, she does not believe in ass-kicking, even though that guy clearly deserves it.

Wow. Exhorting God to stand up for Himself is totally off the page. Can't you hear yourself shouting "My will be done!"?

I pray that my brethren find themselves open to the revelation that God's will is so much broader than abortion and gay rights. If this man's level of passion was faced with a Damascus Road experience and found himself directed to work for greater grace and mercy and justice and peace in the world, that would be a manifold blessing.

Local pastor warms up the crowd at 6:05. Now God isn't just a whiny status-conscious teen, he's also the enforcer who gags you before he beats the crap out of you.

And he compared Palin to Esther? What? I don't even get this analogy.

Re: oooh! we've got another one!

Well, let's see. Esther was the queen of King Ahasuerus of Persia. He didn't actually see his queens that often, and she was hiding her Jewish ethnicity. The king gets sweet-talked by Haman and the king lets Haman set up a plan to rid the kingdom of people. Esther gathers her courage and tells the king what Haman plans those people to be Jews and admits her heritage. Haman is killed and the king tells the Jews to arm themselves. Because of this, Persian Jews lived in Persia for 2400 more years.

So if we apply it to the elections, I guess Palin is telling the people that Obama would kill all the Jews and they should let McCain rule. Okay, that doesn't make much of an analogy, either.

Now, to me that sounds like he's trying to blackmail God. "Hey, God, all these people are praying for you to do the right thing. You wouldn't like it if they all felt let down, would you? All you have to do is..." (Nice little religion you've got here! Wouldn't want anything to happen to it, would you?)
