Michael is home and okay. Nothing is broken and there is no internal bleeding. I do have to wake him up every four hours tonight, and he is not supposed to go back to work for the rest of the week.

He still has a hell of a headache. But I am so grateful, so very very grateful, that it's nothing worse. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and offers of help.

I'm so glad to hear this!! (I saw this post before the other, so I knew Michael was okay, but didn't know what from.) I hope Michael continues to improve and quickly.

Glad to hear it's not more serious.

Piece of advice? From the photo you posted, that looks like water damage. If that's the top floor your landlord needs to check the roof; if not, they need to check any plumbing that goes through that area. **DON'T** let them close that ceiling back up until they can show you they've fixed the problem that caused it to fall in the first place.

Maybe, maybe not. From the photos, that looks like lath-and-plaster. If so, age+vibration+gravity are all you need to bring it down - we had the ceiling over our stairs come down in our last house, and investigation found no other reason. Fortunately no-one was under it at the time.

If it's been plasterboarded, then water damage looks probable. If the laths are discolored, suspect water.

True; I was looking at the way the paint was flaking off. You can see it in the larger photos if you click through; that can be indicative of water damage in lath-and-plaster construction as well.

If you can see the discontinuity in the laths there, in the middle of the hole, that marks the place where the bay window begins. When the house was first built, it was oriented so that the front of the house was what is now the side. Then the street was built up along the side of the house. They added a new front room with outdoor entrance around the turn of the 20th century, and, we theorize, at the same time perhaps they added bay windows on the new front side.

At any rate, the laths for the bay window area don't line neatly up with the laths for the rest of the room. That's your disaster waiting to happen, a hundred years later.

OK, that makes sense. Glad to know that there's an explanation; good luck fixing it.

Oh, thinking good thoughts - that he'll feel better really soon, that the landlord will fix whatever caused this problem, that no more of your ceiling will fall! So thankful he wasn't hurt worse.

Um. Is that the study that used to be your bedroom? If so, I'm glad you switched it around...

It actually would have missed our bed by a fair amount. That corner of the room was mostly clothes. But Colin would have been in the room, and would have inhaled the horrible greasy dust that's left behind everywhere.

I am grateful it didn't happen any later in the day, because the kids are as likely as not to be in the study with us. Of course, earlier in the day would have been better, because then Michael wouldn't be there either.

I am so glad that the prognosis sounds good, and that he'll hopefully stage a complete and quick recovery. How terrifying to be injured in your own home while sitting down at your desk!

WOW--I missed all this and I'm kind of glad! it's the sort of thing it's better to hear about afterwards when things seem to be ok. So glad it's not worse.

(our ceiling collapsed in two different rooms when I was a kid, in a house of similar age. One collapse missed my 7-year-old brother by seconds, but I've never heard of a direct hit!)
